Customer ratings and reviews for HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner

Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Scanner Easy to hook up except the usb cable did not make good contact at first. When I called service they suggested that I plug it in and remove it several times to improve the electrical contact. That worked and I am up and running. Very easy to use with my Mac PowerBook G4 and scans with good quality for a <$200 scanner. September 16, 2009
Rated 4 out of 5 by HP Scanjet G4050 The G4050 Scanner works exactly as advertised and is actually better than I expected. I use the scanner on a Windows VISTA 64 bit system. Setup was simple and quick. Resulting Pictures are really good. The packaged editing software is good but I use my own editing software which is better. I wish the 2 gig limit on Resolution/Scaling was just a tad higher. When scanning 16 slides at once, I was limited to 1200 bits reso. and 300% scaling which is plenty good for just about any use, but what can I say, I'm somewhat of a perfectionist. But for the price you could not possibly ask for more. August 27, 2009
Rated 3 out of 5 by Great for slides, Painfully slow with film Does very well with 35mm slides and hard copy, but difficult and slow with 35mm film. Biggest problem is with 35mm film negatives. With film the software will often leave out a image and nearly always one or more with a full tray of film (20-30 images). You have to count film frames and compare to see if all were scanned. Also likes to run slides together or cut portions off. Find I have to re-scan film several times to get all the photos to register, and sometimes it just does not like a photo and will not register it at all. Tedious and a real challenge to determine out what images did not come through if you do not also have the prints of the negatives to use in comparison. No provision for, as a previous reviewer noted, that 35mm film is almost always cut into groups of four while the transparency mask is set for six. Go figure why there are not smaller blanks provided for the likely two open slots in each of the five columns. Suggestion: use newspaper gloves (thin cottom gloves, ~$1/pair) to protect scanner bed and film/slides/photos from fingerprints. The scan is VERY SLOW for film, the speed claims ("up to" 8.5 sec) is for PREVIEW, not for actually doing anything you would want done. More accurate in timing is the claim of 60 seconds per image to pdf, seems about the sampe to jpg. Figure 20 minutes to scan half a roll of film once. Will take multiple scans to get all the images to register. My estimate is one hour per roll (36 images) if you are lucky. Despite my quibbles, the device is the best out there for this type of consumer scanning application that I could find. The option is to use a commercial scanning service, not sure how good they are or if they scan film with any better accuracy. Good thing I am retired as this thing takes huge amounts of time in scanning film. August 23, 2009
Rated 5 out of 5 by HP Scanjet G4050 I just completed scanning 6430 35mm slides of my family and I am immensely pleased with this scanner. The quality fo the scans is outstanding which I agree is subjective but I was not scanning for commericial purposes. It scanned 16 slides of various densities in approx. 9 to 12 min. and I had the scanner set at 600 ppi. I would not hesitate to recommend this scanner to anyone for the above use. April 16, 2009
Rated 1 out of 5 by Works great for six months This Hp scanner works great for scanning old photos since you can scan four or five photos at one time and they will each have their own file name. The slide scanner is it's best feature as you can scan 24 slides at one time, also having their own file name. Scanning negatives is it's worse feature and is almost impossible. The reason I gave it a one star overall rating is that it develops a problem over time. In about six months it starts to show what looks like dust on the photos. It is a known problem that Hp doesn't seem to want to fix. I have followed their glass cleaning procedure to the letter, along with cleaning my photos/slides with a lint free cloth only to find that tons of dust show up on the final scan. Using the "remove dust" feature does not help so I am almost convinced that it is either a problem with the glass deteriorating with time or the scanning element going bad; either way it's a real problem that makes scans worthless. If a person is going to take all the time to scan photos and slides then they want them in almost as perfect condition as possible; at least as good as the original print. This is not the case. My old cheap scanner continues to work (without the dust problem) but I don't use it because it scans at a low resolution. If Hp could fix this known problem with the dust then it would be a great scanner but for long term use it's almost worthless. Don't suggest you buy it until Hp resolves the problem. January 11, 2009
Rated 1 out of 5 by Vista 64 Warning I bought the G4050 right after it was released as part of an upgrade to my digital darkroom. It advertised many features that I considered important to my workflow, including being Vista compliant. It is not at all. A very disappointing purchase. A year and a half later there still has not been an upgrade to permit me to get any functionality out of the scanners advanced features or utilitze the scanner for every day simple scans.
