Customer ratings and reviews for HP ENVY TouchSmart 14t-k100 Ultrabook CTO (ENERGY STAR)

Rated 4 out of 5 by Great computer, but a few hardware annoyances To start, the computer I had before this was the HP Envy 14 (2010 version). That computer served me very well for 4 years, but a recent drop warranted an upgrade. I'm a student at a prominent engineering school near Boston, so I'd call myself an advanced user. The insides of the computer are great so far - I've had the computer about a week. Super fast, easy to use/search, currently running an HDMI monitor with no increase in fan speed (I have the upgraded graphics card), and it recognizes and installs hardware instantly. I have run programming software very quickly as well, it compiles code extremely fast. The speakers are actually on the keyboard, pointed at the user instead of stupidly pointed under the computer in my old HP computer. The integration in the sound buttons (mute, pause/play, vol up/down) is really awesome. The pause/play buttons on the keyboard easily work with iTunes and Metroradio (an "app" for Windows 8). Now for the hardware: super-solid keyboard, which is actually quiet without feeling touchpad-y. It's actually very quiet, you barely hear it when you type quickly. One issue I have is with the touchpad - for some reason, the left and right click "buttons," which are really just areas on the touchpad, depress quite a lot - so much so that it almost feels like the touchpad is broken or is about to break. Just not as solid at all as my previous touchpad. The same issue is present in the power button as well, it just doesn't feel like a well-crafted button. One thing I really like but didn't think I even wanted was the touch-screen - why would you want a touch screen on a normal laptop? I thought it was stupid, but actually it's kind of cool to be able to quickly swipe around the interface and click on a few buttons here or there. The settings on Windows 8 are almost inconvenient to access without using the touchscreen (swipe in from right). Another issue I have is with the number of ports. I chose this laptop specifically because it had 3 USB's (a rarity when things are only getting thinner and lighter), but it only has one HDMI output. My old Envy at least had a miniDisplayPort output, so it was easier to output to VGA which I need to do all the time. Basically I won't be able to give presentations in classrooms without a complicated USB-VGA adapter or a powered HDMI-VGA adapter, which will prove very annoying. Battery life is about the same as my old computer, maybe a little longer at between 3.5-4 hours; it's enough for a day of class usually. January 12, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Features don't work well The touch feature went off within 2 days can't get anyone in tech support, sit on the phone for hours, really dissapointed with computer , ease of use and the customer service is abyssmal. Even the extended service people couldn't get the features to work. Paid a lot of a lot of nothing in my opinion. When you spend a lot of money for something that disappoints this much and fails by so many metrics what can you recommend? The color? January 11, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by A really good laptop for the money I ordered this laptop with two upgrades: the lighted keyboard and the higher resolution screen. Both were good moves. It appears to be well-built with a slick design. The base has a velvet touch covering which gives it a better grip. It's very quiet with little or no fan noise. The battery life has been a bit disappointing, but it's good enough for my needs. That's my only gripe about the hardware. Windows 8 was very confusing for me at first, but I watched the tutorials and I'm feeling more comfortable with it now. The touchscreen is almost a necessity if you're using Win 8. I hardly use the touchpad so I can't say if I like it or not. Frankly, I'm an HP fan. My last laptop was an HP and it only had one problem in the 10 years I used it, and that was an easy fix. For the money I highly recommend this product. December 4, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Product Overall I have owned this product for about a month now and I must say it is a great product with few problems. The build quality and design of the laptop is great and it feels very sturdy while still feeling extremely light at the same time. There is keyboard flex but you can hardly notice it. The touchscreen on the laptop works just marvelous. Though, the trackpad can be a little too sensitive at times. It will take some time to adjust to. I was able to get around 7 hours of use on a single charge. I am almost positive you can get more hours if you adjust everything down to the lowest setting. There are plenty of apps and features to tool around with out of box. This product is also good for some casual games. Windows 8.1 is a great software but it will definitely take some time to learn all the cool things you can do in it. I mainly purchased this laptop for college and it definitely will suit me well next semester. December 2, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Stay away from it I bought a new laptop cause my old one was giving me problems every other day and I had to spend hours at a time to try to get it back to work. I'm a student and spent a lot on this laptop so that I could concentrate more on my work and stop worrying about these problems, and this laptop just made it worse. This laptop keeps bringing up new issues almost every day or every half a day. I've spent more time on searching and trying to understand the error messages that show up than on actually using it. I've had BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) incidents 4-5 times, have a clicking noise almost all the time and a rattling noise sometimes. I had to reset it once, when I had a BSOD error during the second week. To add to all this, my Wireless button stopped working just a while ago and just had 4 BSODs again just now. I couldn't take it any more and decided to write this review to warn anyone buying this. Also, the advertised weight for this laptop when I bought it was around 4 pounds and HP now changes it to around 6.9 pounds. I even asked a customer representative if the advertised weight is correct and was told it was correct. I will keep updating my review as I face more problems from this laptop. October 22, 2013
